Amazon.com Product Description
American Power Conversion's Back-UPS ES 725 Broadband backup power supply offers a combination of 8 total battery-protected and surge-only outlets, effectively reserving power capacity and run time for any connected equipment that requires battery back-up while maintaining surge-only protection for your less critical equipment. Typical backup time at half load is 14 minutes (225 watts), and typical backup time at full load is 4.3 minutes (450 watts).P Power conditioning protects connected loads from surges, spikes, lightning, and other power disturbances, while dataline surge protection provides protection of connected equipment from power surges on the data lines. You can manage the UPS via its handy USB port.P The device is safety-agency approved, so it's guaranteed to work safely with the connected loads and within the environment. Audible alarms provide notification of changing utility power and UPS conditions, and automatic self-testing provides early detection of potential problems through periodic testing of the UPS components.P The unit is cold-start-capable so you'll have temporary battery power even when the utility power is out from the get-go. Resettable circuit breakers grant quick recovery from UPS overload events, and transformer-block spaced outlets protect equipment with input transformer blocks (otherwise known as wall warts) without blocking access to other receptacles.P Hot-swappable batteries provide clean, uninterrupted power to protected equipment throughout battery replacement.P The system comes with PowerChute Personal Edition (Part Number SDW 85, for Windows 98/Me/XP/2000 and Mac OS 9.0.4 or higher), which is safe, easy-to-use system-shutdown software with sophisticated power-management functions. Features include context-sensitive help, graceful system shutdown, a performance summary, self-test checks battery health, and "status at a glance."P Last but certainly not least, APC's lifetime data-recovery warranty provides peace of mind by ensuring professional data-recovery services in the event that data is lost due to the failure of the unit. bWhat's in the Box/bbr Backup power supply, software CD (PowerChute Personal Edition, plus free trial of anti-virus, firewall, e-mail privacy, system recovery, and online backup software), cord-management straps, a USB cable, a user's manual, and warranty information.

5 out of 5 stars Flawless and Reliable UPS Backup   January 17, 2006

I now own three of these devices, one for every computer in the house. With Windows XP and APC's included PowerChute software, the device as automatically shut down our computers during power outages just as advertised.br /br /Much more frequent the power outages around here are surges and line noise. Some of these are external, but I happen to have a laser printer that draws a lot of current when it wakes up: it used to cause the lights to flicker and occasionally popped the circuit breaker. Now that it's also plugged in to the APC, everything is happy. br /br /The telephone line/Ethernet/coax protection is a nice bonus. Over the years, we lost more electronics to lightning strikes on the phone line than anything else. If you don't have whole-house surge protection on your phone line, this type of protection is a must.

1 out of 5 stars Keeps my hardware turned off when it should be on   December 27, 2005

APC is a good name, and my last UPS from them was fantastic, but this is a whole different story. This UPS has been driving me crazy and I wish I never had bought it. Sometimes during the night it will beep at me, which I assume is natural due to glitches in the crummy power at my apartment. The real problems occurred when in the middle of the night, the APC began to screech at me as if the power had gone out, except that it hadn't. On top of that, the two systems I had plugged into the "Always On" plugs were TURNED OFF until I power cycled the UPS, at which point they both turned back on. The worst part is that nothing else in the house had any sort of problem--clocks were all set right, etc.. To me, that is the absolute opposite of what a UPS should do, and because of that I can only recommend that you find some other model that doesn't have weird problems like this. I certainly am going to...

4 out of 5 stars Great Item, Great Value   September 10, 2005

This unit was easy to configure and setup. software for "computer shutdown" was easy to install, but had 1 drawback. It requires that you logon as ADMINSTRATOR. Having adminstrator rights is not enough. This is a drawback as many people don't know or remember the administrator account, nor how to change that password.br /br /Size of unit, support for up to 8 devices, battery life are very good. Allows for minimum of 2 power bricks and didn't take up much space. br /br /You'll need some cable management ties or tiewraps or something to keep your wires straight and now would be a good time to label each power cord.br /br /As stated, good unit, and good value. Don't forget if you allow your computer to run a battery to calculate how long it takes to shutdown your computer properly. If it takes 4 minutes to shut your computer down, don't allow it to run on battery for 20 minutes or there won't be enough power left for shutdown. Experiment...

4 out of 5 stars Good UPS but not much better than the ES 500   August 18, 2005
8 out of 8 found this review helpful

This is a good UPS but I think the Back-UPS ES 500 is a better deal. This unit only has a slightly bigger battery which only lasted 15 minutes vs 12 minutes for the ES 500 in my test (200W load). It does however have 2 extra outlets and Coax surge protection, which might make it worth the extra for some people.br /br /If you wanted more runtime for about the same price the new Back-UPS ES 750 has a significantly larger battery which probably lasts a bit longer. I would suggest looking into that. Overall it's a pretty good but very basic UPS, well suited for the average home computer.

2 out of 5 stars Mine died in 2 months   August 4, 2005

I bought this particular model because all the good reviews that I read. However, my unit quit working in 2 months. The LED is still green, and when you unplug it from the wall outlet it still makes loud beeps. But it won't power up the things connected. I heard other people have the same problem and it might be related to the batteries. br /I returned mine yesterday, but since it's over 30 days old, I can't get the reimbursement for the shipping cost. br /In conclusion, I can't recommand this thing, although I know APC is supposed to be a company that makes quality products. You may need to try another model.
