5 out of 5 stars Acer Laptop Review   January 9, 2009
Acer Laptop with 6 cell battery works wonderfully. It's small portability makes it an attractive addition to your technology collection. The laptop is fully functioning without the DVD/CD drive. However, with a little technology know-how, you can copy your CD contents onto a flash drive and utilize that in place of a CD. The battery lasts very long and the keyboard is the right size for its compact abilities.

5 out of 5 stars No More Research Needed!   January 9, 2009
I can save many of you several hours of research, confusion and uncertainty if you are thinking about purchasing this "netbook". It should be in a 'mini-laptop' category since that is essentially what it is. Purchased on Amazon at the current price, is a GREAT deal. Keep in mind this is only 8.9" and takes some getting used to. The keyboard, although smaller, took almost no time at all to master. The boot up and shut down times are less than a minute. There are a few really great blogs out there with a TON of helpful information on getting the best performance out of this machine.br /br /The clarity and brightness are great. Speakers are basically for browsing only. The font size IS smaller than you are probably accustomed to but with one click to 125%, it is as good as any other laptop. We really disliked packing the 15" laptop on any long day trips or weekends but this will go with us everywhere without hesitation.br /br /The 6-cell battery DOES last the full 6 hours which is a HUGE HUGE plus for travel. I know it looks small and 'plastic-y' but it feels solid when you open/close/carry it. I strongly suggest purchasing one of the suggested neoprene sleeves and a memory card. Getting this in White would also be a good idea. This shell is a fingerprint magnet, much like a Nintendo DS system but the white hides it well. Lastly, the wifi works incredibly. Picked up our signal and every wireless connection on the block within a few seconds. Not a single problem so far. Great machine!

1 out of 5 stars One Pain After Another   January 9, 2009
I purchased a new Aspire 5100 and it broke within 8 months of normal use. Dealing with Tech Support was a nightmare. I have, all told, spent over 12 hours on the phone with those people, mostly waiting on hold. First, all repairs are done in Texas and the expense to send broken items lies with the customer. They repaired it, returned it to me, and it had an entirely new set of problems. I sent it back. They repaired it, returned it to me, and on day 89 of the 90 day warranty it broke again. This was on a Saturday when Tech support is closed. I called on Monday and they claimed that the warranty had expired but that they would look at it if I first paid them $400 up front for "out of warranty service" and shipped it Texas yet again.br /br /DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT! BE SURE TO PURCHASE A PRODUCT THAT HAS A RELIABLE AND DECENT SUPPORT TEAM AND POLICY.

5 out of 5 stars Exceeded expectations   January 9, 2009
I was so pleasantly surprised by the "beefed-up" Aspire with XP, 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD large battery pack, that what began as an information gathering exercise turned into an impulse buy. For the first time in memory - I haven't had a moment of buyers remorse from this particular impulse purchase.br /I do not have small hands, yet I found the very compact keyboard easy to use. The compromises over a full sized notebook are quite minimal considering the much more compact form factor.br /I found the atom processor much less sluggish than expected - that may have to do with the generous amount of RAM in this particular configuration. I still won't be editing videos or playing graphics intensive games, but for basic cloud computing - including streaming video - it seems totally up to the task.br /Since I often use it in noisy environments - trains, coffeeshops etc - the reported fan noise has never been an issue for me. Perhaps because it is replacing a much noiser and vastly underpowered older notebook, I see nothing but upside to my purchase.br /I also found the WiFi to be much more sensitive than my old notebook, so connectivity is far less troublesome with the Aspire. The large battery pack yields far more life than I'm used to. Upwards of 5 hours, where my old mobile Athlon based notebook would be unlikely to last 90minutes.br / Perhaps my standards are too low to offer a critical review, but all I can offer are my experiences and opinion. For me, this little netbook has been the most positive mobile experience I've yet had.br / I've also started accessorizing it with items like a USB DTV tuner, and GPS receiver. This seems to be a case where having XP is a plus - though I'm considering adding Linux a bootloader. I've had the Aspire for about a month and the "owners delight" has yet to wear off.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Computer   January 9, 2009
I received mine yesterday (1/8/09) and it took about 10 minutes to set up before I was on line. It is easy to use, even for someone like me who is NOT very good with setting computers up. I am glad I purchased this computer.
